There Will Always Be Something About Mary

This post was originally published on April 9, 2015. It’s so hard to believe that another year has gone by without Mary. It’s so important to me to keep her memory alive. Please read and share as a reminder to everyone just how precious life is. And share Mary’s message, that it indeed goes on.

One year ago today my cousin Mary died. It was a huge blow to all that knew her. She was a beloved fiance, amazing daughter, cherished sister, sincere friend, insanely talented teacher, loving niece and cousin to so many. Not to mention the most stylish person to ever walk the face of the earth. It is still unbelievable to me that she is gone.

When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Losing Mary just reminded me of how truly unfair life can be. She was a completely healthy woman with her entire life ahead of her. An amazing life. She was engaged to be married to a great guy. They were both teachers at the same high school. Together they impacted the lives of countless students. And together they planned to spend the rest of their lives. And it was all just taken away from her. From them.

“In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on.” ~Robert Frost

Mary was the youngest of four children. She was the baby. When we were little I can remember being at a block party at her house and she went missing. I can vividly remember the worry on her older siblings faces. I saw the same looks on their faces those last days in the hospital. The worry you can only have for your baby sister.

And when the broken-hearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Losing Mary has taught me so much about life. It is meant to be lived. Everyday. To the fullest. Mary’s life was so short. Yet she accomplished so much. The amounts of lives she has touched is immeasurable. Every student she ever had came to pay their respects to her.

This last year was spent with doing all of the firsts without Mary in our lives. We were supposed to be at her wedding. Reliving these past couple of days thinking about where we were last year. When we still had hope. It’s been so hard.

And when the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music,
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Mary was so many things to so many different people. The way her parents and brother and sisters have carried on is such a tribute to her. They have been here for all of us this entire year when they have been in so much pain. They have taught me about living. They have taught me about class. They have taught me about love.

Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Oh, there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Mary is gone. She is not coming back. The one year mark solidifies that fact. But we are all still here. Each day we make a choice. And we choose to live. The life that Mary didn’t get to.
